Eucalyptus Timber Mats vs Oak Timber Mats: Which Holds Up Better

If you’ve spent any time sourcing timber mats for a project, you’ve probably run into the same conversation every project manager and procurement manager eventually has: oak or Eucalyptus or mixed hardwoods. They all show up constantly in supplier catalogs, both get pitched as “industry standard,” and both come with strong opinions attached. But the real question isn’t which wood sounds more premium. It’s which mat is still doing its job on day 400 of a muddy, high-traffic job site.

We know oak, mixed hardwoods and Eucalyptus well. This isn’t a hit piece on oak or mixed hardwoods. Oak is a tremendous wood with a long, long history. The British came to the States 400 years ago to harvest oak for their ships and economy. Britain had run out of oak from overcutting..

The Oak Shortage No One’s Talking About

The British found huge trees with almost perfect timber and no defects. Within 50 years timber cutting in the Colonies had to be curtailed. The big beautiful 3’ diameter logs were gone. Oddly enough, that’s sort of where we are today in most USA forests: Oak is expensive, cut aggressively, and the species which take its place are faster growing and not as strong. For example, what used to be a primarily all oak forest – the mid-Atlantic hardwood forests – are now almost 50% poplar, a species that is not very strong, shouldn’t be used in matting, but is used extensively because it’s available.

So, the better question for buyers’ to ask is: How strong is the exact raw material that’s going into a mat and how well manufactured is the mat?

So, let’s break it down so there’s a straight comparison based on how each material actually behaves under equipment loads, moisture and rot, and repeated use. Then you can make the call based on your project rather than a sales pitch.

Raw Material Basics

Species, grade and dimension are the three driving factors. 

  • Species: About 20 main USA commercial species. 
  • Grade: For mats, practically three grades: #1, #2, and #3 grades. 
  • Dimension: Timber mats should be made of “timbers”. Timbers are defined as a 5” x 5” and greater size. Anything less than that isn’t a timber. So you can’t have a timber mat with 8” x 8” timbers next to an 8” x 2” lumber piece. It’s not a timber mat.

If you get a strong species with a good grade you will probably get decent to good manufacturing too. That’s because any mill that sorts for species and grade is very motivated to make quality products; otherwise they wouldn’t bother to separate good species from low grade species or high grade from low grade.  

How Oak Timber Mats Perform

Important note: “Mixed oak” is a recognized species group. “Mixed hardwoods” is a marketing name. The different oak species have different strength characteristics. Red oak, white oak, and mixed oak all have bending strength of ~550 PSI for #2 and ~1000 PSI for #1. No one can afford to put the best grade – Select Structural – into mats. Too expensive.

Having said that, oak has been the default choice in the mat industry for decades, and for good reason. It’s a hardwood with very good strength characteristics, and when it’s properly manufactured and maintained, it holds up well under moderate loads.

Weight is another factor. Oak mats, like many hardwoods, are heavy and lose moisture slowly, which is good for stability but tough on freight budget.

How Eucalyptus Timber Mats Perform

Eucalyptus is a newer entrant in the North American mat market, but it’s not a new material globally. World Forest Group introduced Eucalyptus matting to the USA in 2016. These numbers vary by supplier and how the mats are milled and treated, so treat them as general ranges rather than guarantees. But the pattern holds across most side-by-side field comparisons: Eucalyptus mats tend to survive longer under repeated wet-dry cycles because they are rot resistant, and their weight advantage adds up fast once you’re moving dozens or hundreds of mats. Eucalyptus is rot resistant because of the chemicals that are in the wood. Cost Over Time, Not Just Upfront Price

This is where the comparison actually matters for your budget. 

  • Mixed hardwood mats are priced less than Eucalyptus. 
  • Oak mats are priced higher.
  • Eucalyptus falls between the two.

 But the purchase price is the wrong way to look at it. If a mixed hardwood mat lasts two years and an oak mat lasts three years and a Eucalyptus mat lasts five years then you are buying 2.5 mixed hardwood for every Eucalyptus mat. And you are paying more for oak even though it doesn’t last as long. If Mats needs replacing after two years instead of five, you’re not saving money. You’re paying for the same mat multiple times, plus the labor and downtime that comes with swapping out failed mats mid-project.

Freight costs matter here too. If Eucalyptus mats let you ship more mats per truckload because they weigh less, that’s a direct drop in your freight spend on every delivery, not just a one-time saving. At $1500/truckload your savings work out to about $18/mat every time you move them.

Safety, Handling and Installation on Site

There’s a practical side to this comparison that often gets left out of spec sheets: what it’s actually like for your crew to work with and move these mats every day.

Safety first

Many Eucalyptus plantations are third-party certified, carbon-neutral operations, which is worth asking about regardless of which supplier you choose. If your project has environmental reporting requirements, or your client does, this can be a meaningful point of differentiation that American hardwoods like oak or mixed hardwoods simply can’t match.

Which One Fits Your Project

Choose oak if: You’ve got a reliable mat manufacturer near your jobs where freight isn’t a big factor or where you are comfortable you can pass on the lower lifespan and higher monthly cost to your customer.

Choose Eucalyptus if: your site sees regular freeze/thaw or wet/dry, the project spans multiple seasons, you’re managing freight costs closely, or you want fewer mat replacements over the life of a longer contract. This is why Eucalyptus has become the preferred choice for oil and gas, utility, and construction projects that run mats hard for years at a time.

A Simple Cost Example

Numbers make this easier to picture. Say a project needs 10000 mats and runs for five years.

With oak, assuming a typical lifespan of three years, you’re likely to replace that full set once during the project, meaning you’re effectively buying 20,000 mats worth of material over five years, plus the labor to swap them out and the downtime while replacement mats are sourced and delivered.

With Eucalyptus, assuming a five or six-year average lifespan, the original 10000 mats can realistically make it through the entire five-year project without a full replacement. Even accounting for some natural attrition, you’re nowhere near buying a second full set.

Add in the freight savings from Eucalyptus lower weight, and the gap widens further. If Eucalyptus lets you ship more mats per truckload meaningfully, that’s a real reduction in delivery costs on every single shipment across the life of the project, not a one-time difference.

None of this means oak is a poor choice for every situation. A short, three-month project on a site near a reputable oak sawmill may be fine, and in that case the higher upfront cost of oak can be the right call because you won’t pay much freight. The comparison changes as the timeline and site conditions change, which is exactly why “which one is better” isn’t really the right question. The better question is which one fits best, how long the project is, and how good/bad the ground conditions are which determines how hard your specific project will use it.

Common Mistakes Buyers Make When Comparing Mats

A few patterns show up again and again when companies are choosing between oak and Eucalyptus, and they’re worth flagging before you make a decision.

Comparing only the sticker price: The upfront quote per mat is the easiest number to compare, so it’s often the only one buyers look at. But as the cost example above shows, the upfront price rarely tells the full story once replacement cycles and freight are factored in. With Oak sticker price happens to be higher than Eucalyptus. But with mixed hardwoods, it’s not the case.

Not accounting for site-specific conditions: A mat that performs well on a dry inland site may behave very differently on a coastal project with high humidity, or a site that floods seasonally or experiences daily freeze/thaw. Whichever material you choose, ask your supplier how it performs specifically under the conditions your project will face.

Not comparing across all mat types available: Oak and Eucalyptus aren’t the only two options on the table. Overlooking handling and labor costs: Material cost and lifespan get most of the attention, but the day-to-day labor cost of moving heavier mats adds up over a project’s duration, especially on sites where mats are repositioned frequently rather than placed once.

One last Caveat Emptor: Make sure your supplier sends you mats that are a real 48” wide and real 8” thick and a real 16’ or 18’ long. Often they don’t.
